About the Event:
CAA is hosting a special panel event, “Adoption-Informed Counseling: Themes and Reflections for Chinese Adoptees,” with Joy Lieberthal-Rho, LCSW, and Chaitra Wirta-Leiker, PsyD, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. Attendees will learn about adoption-informed treatment, screening questions for prospective therapists, specific questions when considering therapy, and common clinical experiences specific to Chinese adoptees and their families. This adoptee-only event will also include a Q&A session.
Joy’s Bio:
Joy Lieberthal Rho, LCSW, is a social worker/counselor in private practice and at the Juilliard School in NY. She is Co-Founder of IAMADOPTEE.org, an online mental health and wellness resource for the international adoptee community. She is a founding member and former president of Also-Known-As, a policy analyst at Donaldson Adoption Institute and on the staff of a private adoption agency in NYC. Joy created the original mentorship programs for Also-Known-As and Spence-Chapin adoption agency. Joy worked as a clinical supervisor at the Korean American Family Service Center, a domestic violence service organization. She is adopted from Korea, was found by her birthmother in 1994 and continues to be in reunion with her.

Chaitra’s Bio:
Dr. Chaitra Wirta-Leiker is a licensed psychologist, international/transracial adoptee of color, and an adoptive parent. She specializes in providing mental health support focused on adoption, trauma, and racial identity work through her private practice based in Denver, Colorado. She is a frequent speaker and trainer at adoption agencies, camps, and conferences throughout the U.S., and the creator of the National Adoptee-Therapist Directory. She is also the author of “The Adoptee Self-Reflection Journal,” “The Adoptive Parent Self-Reflection Journal,” and the “Adoptees Like Me” illustrated series for elementary readers.
