FCCLI to Robert Moses Beach  8/6/2010
Join FCCLI families for an informal get together at the beach!
Place: Robert Moses State Park parking field #5 Date: August 6th
Time: 4pm til dusk
Park by the concession stand and we usually set up to the right of the lifeguard stand. The crowds typically start thinning out by around 4ish so a larger area may become available for us to all sit with one another after 4 if we cannot all gather in a larger when we first arrive. Pack your own dinner/drinks, bring a chair and have some nice conversation while the kids play. They stop collecting parking fees at 4pm. If you arrive earlier, there is a $10 fee without the Empire State Park Pass. Lifeguards are on duty until 7pm. It would be nice to know how many people plan on coming, but no RSVP is required. This is not a FCC sponsored event. No one in particular is "in charge" of this event. Just come if you would like! The concession stand is open until 7 pm. In the event rain, no rain date is set. Questions? Contact Beth Laxer-Limmer at edcoordinator@juno.com

Camp China Culture Camp~Black Mountain, NC     [Camp China Culture Camp website] 8/6/2010
Camp China is a summer weekend for children of adoptive families held in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Camp China takes place at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in western North Carolina at Black Mountain. This year it will be held from August 6 and ending on the evening of August 8 / morning of Aug. 9th. Camp China helps children understand and feel proud of their heritage and understand their adoption. Children attend sessions where they have fun participating in activities such as dancing and singing, creating works of art, and playing games such as Chinese jump rope and Chinese Yo Yo. While the children are learning, adults also attend workshops to continue learning about the many phases of adoption or just relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. The Camp has a large outdoor pool, hiking trails, tennis courts, basketball courts, as well as being less than 30 min. from Asheville. The bonds children form at Camp China often lead to friendships that continue long after the camp's last event. From arrival night to closing night, the event will be one you and your family will treasure forever. Please have a look at the website www.ourcampchina.com, and if interested send in your registration or ask any questions you may have. First Person Plural on PBS POV     [PBS POV website] 8/10/2010
First Person Plural by Deann Borshay Liem Tuesday, August 10 at 10:00 PM (60 minutes) This is an encore performance.* In 1966, Deann Borshay Liem was adopted by an American family and was sent from Korea to her new home. Growing up in California, the memory of her birth family was nearly obliterated until recurring dreams lead Borshay Liem to discover the truth: her Korean mother was very much alive. Bravely uniting her biological and adoptive families, Borshay Liem’s heartfelt journey makes First Person Plural a poignant essay on family, loss, and the reconciling of two identities. A co-presentation of Independent Television Service and the National Asian American Telecommunications Association. * Note: Not all PBS stations choose to rebroadcast encore presentations. Please check local listings to see whether this show will be airing. The schedule is here. http://www.pbs.org/pov/tvschedule/

MOCA Walking Tour: From Coffeehouses to Banquet Ha     [MOCA website] 8/28/2010
MOCA Walking Tour: From Coffeehouses to Banquet Halls Sat, Aug 28 from 1pm – 2:30pm Restaurants have played a major role in Chinatown history since the early settlements. The earliest Chinese eateries in New York catered strictly to the needs of Chinatown’s turn-of-the-century “bachelor society.” Over time, however, Chinatown’s restaurant industry would reflect the neighborhood’s changing immigrant population and needs. Through present-day and historical food-related sites, this themed walking tour will trace the evolution of Chinese American eateries and food ways in Chinatown, and highlight the ways in which these eateries have both reflected and shaped this community. Fee: $15/adult, $12/student & senior, $8/MOCA member, free for children under 5. Advance reservation required. Please call (212)619-4785 or email education@mocanyc.org with your name, contact information, and number of people in your group. Tours leave from the lobby of 215 Centre Street, NY, NY 10013.

Wo Ai Ni (I Love You) Mommy on PBS POV     [PBS POV website] 8/31/2010
Wo Ai Ni (I Love You) Mommy by Stephanie Wang-Breal Broadcast: Tuesday, August 31 at 10:00 PM (90 minutes) Online: September 1, 2010 to November 30, 2010 What is it like to be torn from your Chinese foster family, put on a plane with strangers and wake up in a new country, family and culture? Stephanie Wang-Breal’s Wo Ai Ni (I Love You) Mommy is the story of Fang Sui Yong, an 8-year-old orphan, and the Sadowskys, the Long Island Jewish family that travels to China to adopt her. Sui Yong is one of 70,000 Chinese children now being raised in the United States. Through her eyes, we witness her struggle with a new identity as she transforms from a timid child into someone that no one — neither her new family nor she — could have imagined. A co-production of American Documentary/POV and the Diverse Voices Project, presented in association with the Center for Asian American Media, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
